After discovering the his wife Margot has a brief affair with mysterious writer Mark Halliday, Tony Wendice, an ex-tennis pro, decides to get rid of his wife and take over all her money. He blackmails an old college associate to strangle her, but when things go wrong he sees a way to turn events into his advantage.
