After watching the ferocity committed on the innocent during WW II, father Lankester Merrin becomes a non-believer. He moves to Africa to live and work as an archaeologist. An antiques dealer comes to him one day and asksMerrin for his help finding an acient relic in a burried church. Merrin discovers that an evil force has been set free from the church and he must defeat it.
